Most towel rails are slow. You turn them on, wait for the metal to get hot, wait for the air to warm up, and by the time the towel is actually cozy, you’ve probably already dried off. It’s a drag. We decided to skip all that waiting. Instead of heating the air, we use shortwave infrared (IR) emitters. Think of it like the sun hitting your skin on a clear day. The secret behind the speed
Inside these units, we use quartz tubes filled with halogen. When you flip the switch, the filament hits its peak temperature in a heartbeat. It sends out energy in a specific wavelength (between 0.76 and 2.5 $\mu$m) that cuts right through moisture and thick fabric. It’s that high-end, luxury hotel feeling, but you don’t have to wait for a boiler to wake up and decide to work.
Building something that actually lasts
Locker rooms are brutal. They’re damp, steamy, and generally harsh on electronics. To stop these from rusting or falling apart, we use coatings that can handle high heat and heavy humidity. We also kept the guts simple. We use standard connectors, so if a part ever needs replacing during maintenance, it’s a quick swap. No drama. The trick is all in the power density. We pack a lot of wattage into a small space to get that “instant-on” effect. But because that creates a lot of concentrated heat, we have to use materials that won’t warp or melt when things get hot.
A few things to keep in mind
There are a couple of catches. Since these elements pull a lot of power the moment they kick in, you’ll want to make sure your electrical panel can handle the initial surge. You don’t want to be tripping breakers every time you want a warm towel. Also, remember that this heat is directional. It travels in a straight line. If you block the emitter or hide it behind something, the efficiency drops. Put them where they can actually “see” the towels, and you’re golden.
