
Why we’re ditching old-school heat lamps for waterproof IR heaters
Let’s be honest: those old incandescent heat lamps just aren’t cutting it anymore. They work okay in a dry room, but the second you put them in a steamy bathroom, they start to struggle. That’s why we’ve seen such a big move toward specialized infrared (IR) heaters with high waterproof ratings. They can actually handle the moisture of a modern bathroom without shorting out or blowing a filament. The battle against steam Water vapor is basically a nightmare for high-voltage heating elements. On a lot of standard heaters, steam leaks right through the seal where the quartz tube meets the ceramic base. It’s a recipe for disaster. We fix this by using high-grade silicone gaskets and sealed housings (look for IPX4 or IPX5 ratings). This keeps the steam away from the electrical terminals. And here is the real danger: if a splash of cold water hits a scorching hot quartz tube, the glass can literally crack from the thermal shock. A good housing acts like a shield, keeping the tube safe from direct splashes. Heat you can actually feel Traditional bulbs waste a ton of energy making light you don’t even need. Infrared heaters are different. They focus on a specific wavelength that goes straight into your skin and the surfaces around you. It feels faster. Much faster. You aren’t waiting around for the air to warm up; you feel the heat the moment you flip the switch. A few things to keep in mind Now, there’s a catch. These high-wattage IR heaters pull a lot of power. You can’t just pop one into an old lighting circuit and hope for the best. You’ll need to check your wiring gauge first. If the wires are too thin, you’re looking at voltage drops or, worse, a junction box that gets way too hot. Also, because these units are sealed tight to keep water out, they tend to trap heat inside. To stop the internal guts from frying, we use aluminum heat sinks to pull that heat away from the circuitry. Even with a waterproof seal, you still need a bit of venting. It just keeps everything running smooth and lasting longer.
