
The Real Reason Your Infrared Heaters Keep Dying
If you’ve ever run infrared heaters in a chicken coop or any livestock setup, you know it’s a nightmare environment. You’ve got intense heat on one side and damp, salty, dusty air on the other. Most people think the heating element is what gives out first. But honestly? It’s almost always the lead-wire junction. Here’s what happens: the seal fails. Just a tiny bit. Then moisture creeps into the electrical connection, everything starts to oxidize, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
Why the cheap stuff doesn’t work
A lot of budget heaters just slap some basic silicone or glue where the wire meets the quartz tube. It looks fine on the shelf, but it’s a disaster in practice. When the heater gets hot, the glass and the glue expand at different rates. They don’t move together. This creates these tiny, invisible micro-cracks. Once those open up, moisture gets in. The insulation bakes, the wires fry, and you’re left with a dead heater and a ground fault.
How we actually fix it
We do things differently. Instead of just “plugging the hole,” we use a multi-stage process that’s usually reserved for high-end industrial gear. We use high-temp ceramic adhesives and heat-shrink sleeves that can handle over 200°C without breaking a sweat. But the real secret is the vacuum-sealed potting compound. We center the lead wires and bond them to the electrode in a way that kicks out every single air pocket. Why? Because if there’s no air, there’s nowhere for condensation to pool. It keeps the electricity exactly where it needs to be, even when the heater is cycling between scorching heat and a damp morning.
A quick heads-up on installation
There is one catch. Because this seal is so tight, the wires are a bit stiffer. Please, don’t bend these wires sharplyright where they enter the tube. If you kink the wire during setup, you might crack that seal we worked so hard to build. Just leave a little slack loop. Give the heater some room to breathe and expand. If you’re fitting these into a tight housing, just double-check that you’ve got enough space so the junction isn’t under any mechanical stress. Your heaters will thank you for it.
