Ever notice how those old-school heat lamps in the bathroom always seem to die right when you need them? It’s not a coincidence. Steam and splashes are brutal on those things, and since they aren’t really sealed, they just burn out. That’s why more people are moving toward recessed infrared heaters. They’re tucked away in the ceiling, they handle the moisture, and they actually work.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing: most heaters try to warm up the air in the room. But air is stubborn. Infrared is different. It sends heat directly to your skin. Because these are recessed, you don’t have some bulky, ugly fixture hanging over your head. Everything is tucked into a sealed housing that keeps the humidity out. We use quartz or halogen emitters, which means the second you flip the switch, you feel the heat. No waiting around in a cold bathroom while the unit “warms up.”
Dealing with the damp
Bathrooms are basically steam rooms. If your fixtures can’t handle constant condensation, they’re going to fail. These units are built with a high IP rating—which is just a fancy way of saying they’re tightly sealed against water vapor. There’s also a tempered glass cover protecting the heating element. This is huge because it stops soap scum and mineral deposits from gunking up the tube. Without that glass, you’d get hot spots, and eventually, the glass would just crack.
The “Gotchas” of installation
Installing these is pretty straightforward—you wire them right into the ceiling grid for a clean, hidden look. But you have to be careful with your measurements during the rough-in. If you’re off by even a few millimeters, you might find yourself accidentally cutting into a joist. Not a fun Saturday afternoon. And a quick heads-up on the power: these things pull a lot of current. Make sure your wiring gauge and circuit breaker can actually handle the load. If your wiring is too thin, you’re just going to trip the breaker the moment you turn the heat on.
